Chapter Eight

Over the next few days Abbie fully mastered the different canals and channels in the lake; she was able to negotiate the sometimes treacherous undergrowth even at night.

As a reward Jericho took her for a ride on the paddleboat. She was surprised to find out the paddleboat captain was Jericho’s uncle.

“Bout time you came to see me, boy,” the big gruff man said before he embraced Jericho and slapped him on the back.

Jericho laughed and returned the hug. “It’s good to see you too, old man. Abbie, this is my uncle Gavin McClain, he owns this old barge.”

“She is not a barge, she is a piece of American history,” Gavin corrected with a bark before he turned to Abbie with a huge grin. “Nice to meet you, little bit. Welcome aboard the Princess Anne.”

Abbie blushed. She wasn’t that small a woman; no one had ever in her life referred to her as ‘little bit.’ “It’s nice to meet you, Mr. McClain,” she said hesitantly.

The big man immediately engulfed her in a bear hug. “It’s Uncle Gavin to you, little bit. I can see the look in my nephew’s eyes. You’ll be one of us before long.”

It was impossible not to return the warm, loving embrace even though his words embarrassed her.

“Uncle Gavin, don’t embarrass my girl,” Jericho admonished his uncle before pulling Abbie back from the old man and into his side.

Abbie buried her hot face against the side of his t-shirt; she knew the old man didn’t mean any harm but she wasn’t sure enough of Jericho’s feelings to be involved in this sort of conversation with his family.

She heard a deep sigh then Gavin’s rumbled apology. “I’m sorry, girl. I sometimes let my mouth run away with me. I didn’t mean to embarrass you. My sister would have loved to meet you.”

Abbie smiled hesitantly. “Thank you.”

“Enough of this mushy stuff,” Gavin said decisively. “Let’s get this paddleboat tour started.”

Abbie looked around the empty boat with a frown. “What about everyone else?”

“Private tour, little bit,” he told her with a grin as he started the large wheel and they began to navigate their way away from the pier. “You two get up on the upper deck. That’s the best view for the trip. Jericho, you can give her the story about the majestic Caddo Lake.”

Jericho led her up to the observation deck that rested just above the large paddle wheel of the boat. The view of the lake was spectacular from the top of the boat; it seemed to magnify the eerie beauty of the tree-canopied lake.

Abbie rested one hand on the railing as she snuggled into Jericho’s side. “Tell me about Caddo Lake.”

“To begin with, Caddo Lake is the only natural lake in Texas. It was formed by a logjam over two hundred years ago. The lake is now an internationally protected wetland and has one of the largest flooded cypress forests in the United States,” Jericho told her as they gazed out over the bow of the boat.
